Three persons have been proposed by President John Dramani Mahama for nomination to Ghana’s Supreme Court, pending parliamentary confirmation.

Justices Bernasko-Essah and Amoako Asante of the Court of Appeal and Tony Forson, a lawyer and former president of the Ghana Bar Association, are the nominees.

In compliance with the 1992 Constitution, the nominations were made after consultation with the Judicial Council.

Before going back to the Ghanaian Court of Appeal, Justice Amoako Asante was President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice.

The Supreme Court will have 21 justices instead of just 18 if the selections are confirmed by Parliament, considerably enlarging the nation’s highest court.

Before their appointments are taken into consideration for approval, the three nominees are anticipated to go through the constitutional vetting process by Parliament’s Appointments Committee.

They will be sworn in as Justices of the Supreme Court after being approved by Parliament, adding their wealth of judicial and legal expertise to the highest court.
