President John Dramani Mahama says the government has reclaimed certain public lands after analysing problematic property transactions as part of measures to improve accountability in the use of state resources.
The President states that in order to stop the inappropriate disposal of public property, the administration has also stopped processing titles related to some unfinished land allocations.
He declared, “Government is determined to end the indiscriminate and undervalued disposal of public lands to politically exposed persons and other influential individuals.”
He emphasised the need for transparent management of public property, arguing that state lands should not be distributed arbitrarily or transferred through murky agreements.
He reaffirmed the government’s intention to draft laws to tighten monitoring of the selling of public lands and other state assets during a courtesy call by the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, July 21.
He continued, “The government is also preparing legislation to ensure that the disposal of public lands and other state assets is subject to clear, transparent legal procedures and prior approval by Parliament.”
Members of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, led by President Prof. Odaifio Welentsi III, voiced concerns about the preservation of public lands and demanded that they be included in the Greater Accra Public Lands Protection Taskforce, which was formed by sector Minister Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah to protect state lands in the area.
