The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to hold a nationwide protest on Thursday, August 6, 2026, alleging that the government is weakening Ghana’s democratic institutions and constitutional governance.
The demonstration, themed “Democracy Under Attack,” is scheduled to begin at 6:00 a.m. at the Supreme Court in Accra before proceeding to Jubilee House. The party is also rallying public support on social media through the hashtags #DemocracyUnderAttack, #SaveGhanaNow, and #SayNoToStateCapture.
Speaking at a press briefing, NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye said the protest is aimed at protecting Ghana’s democracy, constitutional rights, and key state institutions.
According to him, the NPP, together with other political parties, civil society organisations, professional associations, student groups, youth organisations, and concerned citizens, will participate in the demonstration to advocate for democratic governance, accountability, and the rule of law.
He further disclosed that while the main protest will take place in Accra, similar demonstrations are expected to be organised in other regions across Ghana at a later date.
Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a member of the NPP communications team and spokesperson for former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, said the protest is in response to what the party describes as increasing efforts to suppress opposing views and political criticism.
He cited concerns including the arrest of opposition members, legal actions over alleged offensive remarks, the detention of TikTok users and journalists, and what he claimed were restrictive bail conditions. He also alleged that the Executive is exerting excessive influence over the Judiciary, which he said poses a threat to Ghana’s democratic system.
The planned protest comes amid heightened political tensions, with the NPP presenting the event as a campaign to defend civil liberties, judicial independence, and democratic accountability.
The government, however, has rejected allegations of political persecution, insisting that all arrests and prosecutions are carried out in accordance with the law and that Ghana’s security agencies and judiciary remain independent in the administration of justice.
