The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, together with the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has presented assorted food items and beverages to the Ga Traditional Council on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama in support of the 2026 Homowo Festival celebrations.
The government donation was officially handed over to the Ga Mantse and included 119 bags of maize, 119 containers of palm oil, 30 bottles of Black Label, 33 cartons of Castle Bridge, 19 cartons of schnapps, 130 cartons of beer, 81 cartons of Guinness, 83 cartons of Malta Guinness, and 83 cartons of mineral water.
The presentation was attended by the Municipal Chief Executive for the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, Alfred Allotey Gaisie, the Member of Parliament for Odododiodio, Alfred Kotey Ashie, and other government officials.
Government Reaffirms Support for Homowo Festival
Speaking during the ceremony, Regional Minister Linda Ocloo said the delegation delivered the President’s goodwill message and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the people of the Ga State as they prepare for the annual Homowo Festival.
She noted that Ga Mashie, the traditional home of the Homowo celebration, should continue to promote peace, unity, sanitation, and responsible community leadership. According to her, the cultural festival provides an opportunity for residents to uphold traditional values, respect customary authorities, and preserve the rich cultural heritage of the Ga people.
Concern Over Street Trading and Urban Sanitation
The Regional Minister also expressed concern over the growing occupation of roads, pavements, and other public spaces by traders and businesses across Accra.
She explained that some traders have placed refrigerators and commercial equipment on roads and walkways, creating traffic congestion and obstructing pedestrians. She emphasized that although city authorities often receive criticism during decongestion and clean-up exercises, such operations remain necessary to improve public safety, restore order, and maintain a clean environment.
Reinforcing the President’s sanitation campaign, she encouraged residents to treat every day as Sanitation Day by keeping homes, workplaces, markets, streets, and communities clean.
Call for Unity and Peace in the Ga State
Hon. Ocloo further appealed to the people of the Ga State to preserve the traditions inherited from their ancestors, strengthen unity, and avoid allowing chieftaincy disputes or leadership disagreements to divide their communities.
Accra Mayor Urges Youth to Protect the Future of the Ga State
Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey wished the Ga people a peaceful and successful traditional New Year celebration, praying for blessings, peace, and prosperity for the Ga State.
He stressed that there is one Ga State and one Ghana, urging young people to become responsible citizens since they are the future custodians of the city and its traditional institutions.
The Mayor also advised the youth to stay away from drug abuse, harmful substances, and other negative activities that could jeopardize their future, while encouraging them to contribute positively to the development, peace, and progress of the Ga State.
The Homowo Festival remains one of Ghana’s most significant cultural celebrations, promoting unity, heritage preservation, tourism, and community development across the Greater Accra Region.
