President John Dramani Mahama has announced his first major ministerial reshuffle in his second term, with Kenneth Gilbert Adjei reassigned to the Ministry of Defence and two new ministerial nominees submitted to Parliament for approval.
Under the latest Ghana ministerial reshuffle, Dr Zanetor Agyeman Rawlings, the Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle, has been nominated as the new Minister of Environment, Science and Technology.
Majority Leader and Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga has also been nominated to serve as Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
The changes come about one year and eight months into President Mahama’s second term and involve the reassignment of two serving ministers as well as the nomination of two new ministers.
Ken Adjei appointed Defence Minister
As part of the Mahama government reshuffle, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei has been moved from the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources to the Ministry of Defence.
Ken Adjei previously served as Deputy Minister of Defence during President Mahama’s first administration from May 2015 until January 6, 2017.
Meanwhile, Ahmed Ibrahim, the Member of Parliament for Banda, has been reassigned from the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs to the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources.
Zanetor Rawlings nominated as Environment Minister
Dr Zanetor Agyeman Rawlings, a medical doctor and MP for Klottey Korle, is expected to take charge of the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology if approved by Parliament.
Her nomination forms part of the government’s effort to fill key ministerial positions following the deaths of two ministers in a military helicopter crash in August 2025.
Ayariga nominated for Local Government Ministry
Mahama Ayariga, who currently serves as Majority Leader in Parliament, has also been nominated to head the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
His nomination will require parliamentary approval before he can officially assume the ministerial position.
Why Mahama reshuffled his ministers
The latest Ghana government ministerial changes were announced in a statement issued on Friday, August 7, 2026, by Presidential Spokesperson and Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
The reshuffle and new appointments were made in accordance with Article 78(1) of the 1992 Constitution.
The changes are intended to fill vacancies created following the deaths of former Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah and former Environment, Science and Technology Minister Dr Murtala Mohammed, who were among those killed in the military helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.
The nominations of Dr Zanetor Agyeman Rawlings and Mahama Ayariga have now been submitted to Parliament for consideration and approval.
The latest developments are expected to attract significant attention as Parliament begins the process of vetting the two ministerial nominees and President Mahama moves to strengthen his administration in key areas of national governance.
