A 35-year-old mason has been sentenced to eight years in prison by the Kwadaso Circuit Court in the Ashanti Region after being found guilty of robbing a pharmacist at Denchemuoso, near Kwadaso.
The convict, Michael Okyere, was convicted following a full trial presided over by Judge Jephthar Appau. He had pleaded not guilty to the robbery charge.
How the Robbery Happened
According to Police Chief Inspector David Opoku Kwabi, who presented the facts to the court, the complainant, Salomey Ametefe Enyonam, was working as an attendant at Kingsley Nsiah Chemist at Atwima Techiman.
The prosecution told the court that Okyere, who was reportedly seen loitering around the Denchemuoso area, entered the pharmacy on January 22, 2025, at about 9:00 a.m.
He reportedly asked the attendant to see the doctor in charge. When she asked him to wait while she contacted the doctor, Okyere allegedly became aggressive.
The court heard that the convict pushed the complainant against a refrigerator in the office before forcibly taking her iPhone 11 mobile phone valued at GH¢4,500.
Okyere then reportedly fled the scene with the stolen phone.
Suspect Arrested by Residents
The prosecution said the complainant raised an alarm immediately after the incident. Some residents in the area responded and pursued Okyere.
The suspect was eventually apprehended by the youths and handed over to the Denchemuoso Police for further investigation.
During interrogation, Okyere reportedly admitted committing the robbery in his caution statement and pleaded with the authorities for leniency.
After investigations were completed, he was charged and brought before the Kwadaso Circuit Court.
Court Sentences Convict to Eight Years
Although Michael Okyere initially pleaded not guilty, the court found him guilty after a full trial.
The Kwadaso Circuit Court subsequently sentenced the 35-year-old mason to eight years’ imprisonment for the robbery.
The case highlights ongoing efforts by the Ghana Police Service and the courts to prosecute robbery and other criminal offences and ensure that offenders face the consequences of their actions.
