The Greater Accra Police Command has arrested two suspects allegedly linked to the transportation of suspected narcotic drugs after they reportedly attempted to bribe a police officer with GH¢30,000.
The arrests followed an operation by officers of the Bravo SWAT Unit based on police intelligence concerning the alleged transportation and distribution of narcotic substances in Accra.
Police Intercept Kia Rhino Truck at Abofu
According to the police, the operation took place on Friday, September 11, 2026, when officers intercepted a Kia Rhino truck with registration number GN 5581-13 at Abofu, near Achimota.
The vehicle was reportedly travelling from Kpandai and was suspected of carrying narcotic substances intended for distribution in Accra.
Police said the occupants allegedly fled after noticing the presence of officers, leaving the truck and its contents behind.
A subsequent search of the vehicle reportedly led to the discovery of 175 compressed slabs of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs.
The suspected substances were allegedly concealed inside three sacks and three “Ghana Must Go” bags.
The truck and the recovered exhibits were subsequently transported to the Accra Regional Police Headquarters for further investigation.
Suspects Allegedly Offer GH¢30,000 Bribe
During the investigation, two men identified as Mark Bangel, a trader from Kpandai in the Oti Region, and Zakaria Arafat, who reportedly identifies himself as a mechanic from Kpando in the Volta Region, appeared at the police headquarters.
The two allegedly claimed ownership of the intercepted truck and the suspected narcotic substances recovered from it.
The police further alleged that the suspects attempted to influence the Bravo SWAT Unit Commander by offering GH¢30,000 in exchange for the release of the vehicle and recovered exhibits.
The two men were subsequently arrested, while the alleged GH¢30,000 bribe money was retrieved by the police.
Police Search for Third Suspect
According to police sources, preliminary investigations have also identified a third person known only as Salam, who allegedly drove the truck and the suspected narcotic substances from Kpandai to Accra.
The Ghana Police Service said efforts are ongoing to locate and arrest the third suspect.
Meanwhile, Mark Bangel and Zakaria Arafat are assisting with investigations. The intercepted vehicle and suspected narcotic substances remain in police custody as exhibits while investigations continue.
The case forms part of ongoing Ghana Police efforts to combat drug trafficking, narcotic drug distribution and corruption-related offences in the country.
