The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), led by its Chief Executive Officer, Mr Sammy Gyamfi, has joined key government institutions and the mining industry to implement a major agreement aimed at strengthening Ghana’s gold reserves and economic stability.
GoldBod, together with the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Bank of Ghana and Ghana Chamber of Mines, has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) under the Ghana Accelerated National Reserve Accumulation Policy (GANRAP).
The agreement will enable Ghana to secure 30% of the country’s large-scale gold production for strategic national reserves.
GoldBod to Lead Gold Purchase and Reserve Accumulation
Under GANRAP, GoldBod will serve as one of the principal implementing institutions responsible for purchasing and aggregating gold produced by participating large-scale mining companies.
The gold will then be channelled into local refining and national reserve accumulation, supporting Ghana’s broader efforts to strengthen its external reserves and improve economic resilience.
The initiative is expected to play an important role in Ghana’s gold and foreign exchange reserve strategy, particularly as the country seeks to build stronger financial buffers.
How Ghana’s Gold Reserves Could Support the Cedi
The accumulation of strategic gold reserves could have significant implications for Ghana’s economy.
Stronger national reserves can contribute to cedi stability, price stability and improved protection against external economic shocks. Building adequate reserves could also reduce Ghana’s dependence on expensive external borrowing when the country faces international financial pressures.
Through GANRAP, Ghana is targeting 15 months of import cover by 2028. This target is significantly above the internationally recognised benchmark for reserve adequacy.
The policy forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Ghana’s economic position, improve reserve management and use the country’s gold resources to support long-term financial stability.
GoldBod Commends Stakeholders
The Ghana Gold Board expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Bank of Ghana, Ghana Chamber of Mines and participating mining companies for their commitment to the national reserve accumulation initiative.
The agreement represents a major step in Ghana’s efforts to maximise the economic value of its gold production while building stronger national reserves and supporting long-term economic stability.
