President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans by the government to rehabilitate the Pwalugu Tomato Factory in the Upper East Region as part of efforts to increase tomato production and strengthen Ghana’s agro-processing industry.

The President said the renovated tomato processing facility would become a major centre for processing tomatoes produced locally under a planned expansion of tomato cultivation in the region.

Speaking during a citizens’ engagement in Navrongo on Friday, August 14, 2026, President Mahama explained that agriculture and agro-processing would play a central role in the government’s economic development strategy.

Pwalugu Tomato Factory to Support Local Farmers

According to President Mahama, the rehabilitation of the Pwalugu Tomato Factory is expected to support increased tomato farming and create a reliable market for farmers in the Upper East Region.

The facility would provide an avenue for locally produced tomatoes to be processed into value-added products, helping to strengthen Ghana’s agricultural value chain and reduce post-harvest losses.

The initiative forms part of the government’s proposed investment under the New Economy programme, which seeks to place agriculture, industrialisation and agro-processing at the centre of Ghana’s economic transformation.

Government Targets Tomato Production and Agro-Processing

The planned expansion of tomato cultivation is expected to create opportunities for farmers while supporting the development of Ghana’s food processing sector.

By connecting tomato farmers to a rehabilitated processing facility, the government aims to promote local food production, job creation, value addition and agricultural investment.

The Pwalugu project could also contribute to Ghana’s efforts to reduce dependence on imported processed tomato products and strengthen the domestic agro-processing industry.

President Mahama’s announcement highlights the government’s broader focus on using agriculture and agro-processing to drive economic growth and improve livelihoods, particularly in rural communities.
