Member of Parliament (MP) for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah, has expressed his readiness to serve as the running mate to New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of Ghana’s 2028 presidential election.
Speaking in an interview on UTV, Boamah was asked whether he would accept the opportunity to become Dr Bawumia’s vice-presidential candidate should the NPP leadership consider him for the position.
The Okaikwei Central MP responded positively, indicating that he would be prepared to take up the responsibility if he is officially selected.
“I am ready to serve as Dr Bawumia’s running mate if I am called upon to do so,” he stated.
Boamah further explained that he would have no reason to reject the opportunity if the NPP leadership believes he is suitable for the role.
“Why won’t I do it? Yes, I will do it,” he added.
NPP Running Mate Debate Ahead of 2028 Election
Boamah’s comments have added to the growing discussion within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over who could partner Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on the party’s presidential ticket for the 2028 Ghana general elections.
However, some senior NPP figures have urged party members to avoid rushing into discussions about the selection of a running mate.
Earlier this year, Frederick Opare-Ansah, a former campaign manager for Dr Bawumia, cautioned that conversations about a potential running mate were premature.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Opare-Ansah said the NPP’s immediate priority should be rebuilding and reorganising the party following a difficult political period.
“It is way too early to have conversations about a running mate. Our biggest challenge now is to reorganise. We must be patient,” he said.
Running Mate Selection Must Be Strategic
Opare-Ansah also stressed that the eventual choice of Dr Bawumia’s running mate should be based on the political circumstances at the time.
According to him, the NPP would need to consider the strength and identity of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate before making a final decision.
He described the selection of a running mate as a strategic political decision that could influence the NPP’s chances in the 2028 presidential election.
“We do not even know who the NDC will bring. In choosing a running mate, it is a strategic move. Depending on their candidate, you need to choose from a prime area, otherwise it can affect you,” he explained.

The debate over Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate is expected to remain a subject of interest within Ghanaian politics as the NPP works toward rebuilding its political structures and preparing for the 2028 elections.
While Patrick Yaw Boamah has publicly indicated his willingness to serve, the final decision on Dr Bawumia’s running mate will ultimately depend on the NPP’s leadership, electoral strategy and political considerations closer to the 2028 general election.
