The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Ghana has announced a nationwide ban on expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam products, commonly known as Styrofoam or takeaway packs, effective January 1, 2027.
Under the new Ghana plastic ban, the production, importation, distribution, sale and use of EPS foam products will be prohibited across the country.
The ban will affect a wide range of commonly used single-use plastic and foam products, including:
- Takeaway and food packaging containers
- Disposable foam cups and plates
- Foam food containers used by restaurants, chop bars and food vendors
- Polystyrene mattresses and bedding materials
- EPS ceiling materials and insulation products
The EPA says the Styrofoam ban in Ghana forms part of the government’s broader efforts to tackle plastic pollution, environmental degradation and poor waste management.
According to the EPA, the prohibition of EPS products represents the first phase of a wider crackdown on non-biodegradable single-use plastics.
The nationwide policy is expected to encourage businesses, food vendors, manufacturers and consumers to adopt more environmentally friendly and sustainable alternatives as Ghana intensifies efforts to reduce plastic waste and protect the environment.
