Recent actions have been taken by the Greater Accra Regional Co-ordinating Council (GARCC) to reduce traffic congestion and reestablish order in Accra’s CBD.

The council has imposed limitations on the actions of ‘Pragya’ tricycle drivers in an effort to accomplish these goals.

The Council has also outlawed the use of party supplies at local events. The choice was made following a meeting on August 14, 2023, a Monday. This is in response to mounting worries about the ongoing traffic jams and unruly scenes that have been made worse by the operators’ frequent indiscriminate parking and contempt for traffic laws.

In a letter addressed to all metropolitan, municipal, and district chief executives (MMDCEs) and their presiding members, regional minister Henry Quartey urged them to “ensure that all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) ensure that the public is made aware of the resolutions and subsequently pass a bye-law to promote their implementation.

In an effort to maintain peace and order, restrictions have been put in place in places like the CBDs of Accra Metropolitan, Krowor, Korle Klottey, Tema Metropolitan, La Dade Kotopon, La Nkwantanang Madina, Ayawaso East, Ayawaso West, Ayawaso Central, Ayawaso North, Ledzokuku, Okaikwei North, and Adentan Municipal.

The decision to prohibit the use of party supplies aims to establish a more welcoming and tranquil festival environment. It encourages locals and guests to take part in the festivities without the controversial political symbolism.

The GARCC thinks that by taking this action, festivals in the Greater Accra area will build a sense of community and belonging.

The public’s reactions to the GARCC’s decisions have been conflicted. While some people and organizations acknowledge the need for better order and traffic management in the CBD, others voice worries about the livelihoods of tricycle drivers and the potential influence on festival customs. The council is nonetheless devoted to carrying out these policies for the benefit of the area.

In the upcoming weeks, the GARCC is anticipated to offer further information and instructions about the limitations on tricycle drivers and the prohibition on party supplies.

In order to improve the quality of life and overall experience in the Greater Accra region, it is encouraged that stakeholders and the general public work together and support these projects.
