The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has introduced six Ghanaian local languages into its computer-based driving test system to make the driver licensing process more accessible to applicants who have difficulty reading or writing in English.
The DVLA Chief Executive Officer, Julius Neequaye Kotey, announced the initiative during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, October 12, 2026. He explained that the new system is designed to remove language barriers and enable more applicants to complete their mandatory driving tests successfully.
According to Mr Kotey, the computer-based testing (CBT) platform uses translation software to help applicants understand road signs, traffic regulations and essential road safety rules in their preferred local languages.
“We call it CBT Platform to assist applicants who cannot read or write in English. The translation software allows applicants to take mandatory driving tests in six local languages,” he stated.
He added that the DVLA was working to introduce additional Ghanaian languages to the system to improve accessibility and ensure that more people could demonstrate their understanding of safe driving practices.
DVLA Introduces SMS Alerts for Driving Licence Renewal
In another major development, the DVLA has introduced an SMS notification service to remind motorists when their driving licences are due for renewal or replacement.
Mr Kotey disclosed that the system sends text message reminders one month and two weeks before a driving licence expires, giving licence holders sufficient time to complete the renewal process.
He explained that applicants whose mobile phone numbers provided during their licence applications remain active and unchanged should be eligible to receive the notifications.
The initiative is expected to help motorists avoid missing licence renewal deadlines, improve customer service and make driving licence renewal in Ghana more convenient.
Motorists are encouraged to ensure that the contact details registered with the DVLA are accurate and up to date to receive important notifications.
DVLA Plans SMS Reminders for Vehicle Roadworthiness Renewal
The authority is also developing a similar SMS notification system for vehicle roadworthiness certificate renewals.
According to the DVLA CEO, work is underway to ensure that vehicle owners receive timely reminders when their roadworthiness certificates are approaching their renewal dates.
The planned service is expected to make it easier for motorists to keep their vehicles compliant with road traffic requirements and avoid overlooking important renewal deadlines.
Regular roadworthiness inspections are an essential part of vehicle safety, helping ensure that vehicles meet the required standards before being used on Ghanaian roads.
DVLA to Introduce Electronic Library for Driver Refresher Training
As part of efforts to improve road safety and driving standards in Ghana, the DVLA is also introducing an electronic library system at its offices.
The facility will allow clients to access educational videos covering defensive driving, road safety awareness and refresher training to improve their driving skills.
Mr Kotey said the initiative would provide motorists with opportunities to refresh their knowledge of safe driving practices whenever they visit DVLA offices.
The electronic library is expected to support continuous driver education and promote responsible behaviour among road users.
DVLA Digital Reforms Aim to Improve Driver Licensing Services
The introduction of local-language driving tests, SMS renewal reminders and electronic road safety learning resources forms part of the DVLA’s efforts to modernise its services and improve customer experience.
These digital initiatives are expected to make driver licensing services more accessible, strengthen compliance with road traffic regulations and promote safer driving across the country.
For motorists and prospective drivers, the developments highlight the importance of understanding traffic rules, renewing driving licences on time and maintaining valid vehicle roadworthiness certificates.
