The Ghana Prisons Service has launched an investigation into allegations of a plot by some inmates to kill Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman.
The investigation follows claims made by Wontumi’s senior aide, Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, who said the politician alerted him to the alleged threat during a court appearance on Tuesday.
According to Dr Boakye-Danquah, the alleged plot emerged after reports that some inmates had attempted to poison Wontumi while he was in custody. The development comes as the NPP politician marks his 100th day in prison.
Ghana Prisons Service Confirms Investigation
The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Prisons Service, Chief Superintendent of Prisons (CSP) Abdul Latif Adamu, confirmed that the allegations were being investigated to establish the facts.
He expressed concern that the Service had received the information through Wontumi’s aide rather than directly from the politician. However, he stressed that the allegations would not be ignored.
CSP Adamu said the investigation would determine whether the reported threat was credible and whether appropriate action was necessary.
He also declined to confirm reports that prison officers or inmates had been transferred in connection with the alleged incident.
Chairman Wontumi Reportedly Safe in Custody
The Ghana Prisons Service spokesperson assured the public that Chairman Wontumi was healthy, safe and in good spirits while in custody.
He further stated that the politician had not been maltreated and that the Service had procedures through which inmates could report concerns about their welfare and safety.
The investigation is expected to establish the facts surrounding the alleged assassination plot and determine whether further action is required.
