The Minister of Environment, Science and Technology and Klottey-Korle MP, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has visited Zijin Mining’s operations at New Abirem in the Eastern Region to assess the environmental impact of mining activities and promote responsible mining practices in Ghana.
The visit formed part of her field tour to examine the effects of mining on the environment. It highlighted the contrast between Zijin Mining’s environmental management practices and the destruction observed at illegal mining sites in Osino.
During the inspection, officials outlined measures adopted by the mining company to minimise environmental damage, including land reclamation, rehabilitation of mined-out areas and tree planting to restore degraded land.
The visit emphasised the importance of balancing Ghana’s mineral resource development with environmental protection. Although mining contributes to economic growth, it must not destroy water bodies, farmlands, forests and ecosystems or threaten the wellbeing of future generations.
Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings’ visit reinforces the need for stronger environmental protection measures and responsible mining practices across the country.
Responsible mining, environmental sustainability and the restoration of degraded lands remain essential to ensuring that Ghana benefits from its mineral resources without sacrificing its natural environment.
