The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is set to host Her Majesty Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Financial Health (UNSGSA), during her official visit to Ghana on November 4 and 5, 2026.

The visit will focus on Ghana’s achievements in financial inclusion, digital financial services and financial health, as well as strategies to strengthen access to affordable and sustainable financial products for individuals, workers and small businesses.

Queen Máxima to Meet Bank of Ghana Governor

As part of her engagement, Queen Máxima will hold a bilateral meeting with the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama.

The discussions will examine Ghana’s progress in expanding financial inclusion and digital finance, alongside key policy and regulatory measures needed to improve the financial well-being of households, employees and small businesses.

The engagement is also expected to explore ways of strengthening Ghana’s financial sector to support economic resilience, responsible financial practices and inclusive economic growth.

Bank of Ghana and Queen Máxima to Organise Financial Health Roundtable

The Bank of Ghana and Queen Máxima will jointly organise a high-level Financial Health Roundtable, bringing together senior representatives from the banking industry, electronic money issuers, payment service providers, insurance companies, pension institutions, regulators and development partners.

Key areas for discussion will include how Ghana measures financial health and the development of innovative financial products and services.

Participants will also explore opportunities in savings, responsible lending and credit, insurance coverage, pension schemes, investment opportunities and workplace financial wellness programmes.

The roundtable will further examine how financial institutions and other industry stakeholders can collaborate to improve financial security and promote responsible financial management across the country.

Queen Máxima’s Visit Follows High-Level IMF and World Bank Discussions

The upcoming visit follows earlier engagements between Queen Máxima, Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson and Bank of Ghana Governor Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama during the Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group.

Financial health emerged as a major priority during those discussions, particularly in relation to strengthening economic resilience, improving financial security and promoting inclusive economic development.

The latest engagement is expected to provide an opportunity for Ghana to build on its achievements in financial inclusion while addressing emerging challenges within the financial services industry.

Ghana Records 81% Financial Account Ownership

According to the World Bank’s Global Findex Database 2025, Ghana is among Africa’s leading countries in digital financial inclusion, with approximately 81 per cent of adults owning financial accounts.

The country has also made significant progress in developing digital payment infrastructure and expanding its fintech ecosystem, helping more individuals and businesses access formal financial services.

However, improving access to financial accounts and digital payment platforms represents only one aspect of financial inclusion.

The next priority is to ensure that Ghanaians can effectively manage their finances, build savings, access responsible credit, obtain insurance protection, prepare for retirement and make sound investment decisions.

Strengthening financial health is therefore considered an important next phase of Ghana’s financial inclusion agenda.

Bank of Ghana Reaffirms Commitment to Financial Inclusion

The Bank of Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to building a safe, resilient and inclusive financial system that improves the financial well-being of all Ghanaians.

The central bank believes that stronger financial health, responsible financial services and wider access to digital finance will contribute to sustainable economic growth and improved living standards.

Queen Máxima’s visit is expected to further strengthen collaboration between Ghana and international financial institutions in advancing financial inclusion and financial health initiatives.
