Ghana’s cedi has been ranked as the fourth-highest-valued currency in Africa against the United States dollar, despite losing approximately 10 per cent of its value against the dollar in 2026.
The October 2026 currency ranking placed the Ghanaian cedi at approximately GH¢11.58 to US$1, positioning it behind the Tunisian dinar, Libyan dinar and Moroccan dirham.
Tunisia topped the ranking with its dinar trading at 2.98 to the US dollar, followed by Libya’s dinar at 6.39 and Morocco’s dirham at 9.81. Ghana ranked fourth, while Botswana’s pula, trading at 13.76 to the dollar, occupied fifth position.
Ghana Cedi Faces Pressure Against US Dollar
Despite its strong position in Africa’s currency ranking, the cedi has experienced renewed depreciation pressures in 2026, losing about 10 per cent of its value against the US dollar.
This development follows a significant recovery recorded by the Ghanaian currency in 2025, when it made substantial gains against major international currencies.
The latest depreciation highlights the challenges facing Ghana’s foreign exchange market, including exchange-rate stability and the performance of the local currency against the US dollar.
Bank of Ghana Reports Latest Cedi Exchange Rate
The Bank of Ghana’s interbank exchange rate stood at approximately GH¢11.66 to US$1 on November 3, 2026.
This indicates a slight movement from the GH¢11.58 exchange rate used in the October African currency ranking, highlighting the changing nature of foreign exchange rates.
Although the cedi remains among Africa’s highest-valued currencies based on its nominal exchange rate against the US dollar, its recent depreciation underscores the importance of maintaining currency stability and strengthening Ghana’s foreign exchange market.
