The population of Ghanaians living abroad has increased significantly over the past decade, rising from 250,624 in 2010 to 293,416 in 2021, according to Government Statistician Dr Alhassan Iddrisu.

The latest figures, obtained from Ghana’s 2010 and 2021 Population and Housing Censuses, represent an increase of 42,792 Ghanaians living outside the country over the 11-year period.

The development highlights the growing trend of Ghanaian migration as citizens continue to travel abroad in search of better employment opportunities, higher education, improved living conditions and economic prospects.

Europe Hosts the Largest Population of Ghanaians Abroad

Europe remains the leading destination for Ghanaians living overseas, accounting for approximately 37.6 per cent of the total Ghanaian diaspora.

The Americas rank second, representing 23.7 per cent, while ECOWAS member countries account for approximately 23.3 per cent of Ghanaians residing outside the country.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Dr Iddrisu disclosed that other African countries account for 10 per cent of Ghanaians living abroad.

He added that Asia represents 4.7 per cent, while Oceania accounts for just 0.7 per cent of the total population.

Providing the regional breakdown, the Government Statistician stated that Europe and the Americas remain the two major destinations for Ghanaian migrants.

The figures demonstrate the continued importance of traditional migration destinations, particularly countries in Europe and North America.

Why Many Ghanaians Are Moving Abroad

The concentration of Ghanaian migrants in Europe and the Americas reflects longstanding migration patterns influenced by several factors, including access to quality education, employment opportunities, family reunification and historical connections.

Meanwhile, the significant number of Ghanaians living within the ECOWAS sub-region highlights the importance of regional integration and free movement of people across West African countries.

The ECOWAS free movement framework has made it easier for citizens of member states to travel, reside and pursue economic opportunities within the region.

Although Asia and Oceania account for smaller proportions of Ghana’s overseas population, these regions continue to represent alternative destinations for education, business and employment.

Ghanaian Diaspora Statistics to Support National Development

The census figures provide important information for government institutions and policymakers seeking to strengthen engagement with Ghanaians living abroad.

However, the statistics cover individuals identified or enumerated as living outside Ghana during the census periods and may not represent the entire Ghanaian diaspora population.

Despite this limitation, the increase between the 2010 and 2021 census exercises offers valuable insights into international migration trends and the geographical distribution of Ghanaian citizens overseas.

The information could help the government improve diaspora engagement initiatives, attract foreign remittances, encourage investment from Ghanaians abroad and promote skills and knowledge transfer.

As Ghana continues to explore opportunities to harness the economic potential of its citizens overseas, understanding where Ghanaians live and work will remain essential to national development planning.

The growing Ghanaian diaspora therefore represents an important resource for investment, entrepreneurship, international partnerships and the country’s long-term economic growth.
