The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park has proposed the inclusion of the historic photograph of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, declaring the country’s independence on March 6, 1957, on selected Ghanaian banknotes.
The proposal seeks to replace the existing image of the Big Six on some banknotes with the iconic independence declaration photograph as part of efforts to broaden the historical representation of Ghana’s currency.
In a statement issued on Friday, November 6, 2026, the management of the Memorial Park said the initiative aligns with the Bank of Ghana’s proposed introduction of a Heritage Series of banknotes.
Currently, images of the Big Six appear on almost all Ghanaian banknotes in recognition of their significant contributions to the country’s independence struggle.
However, the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park believes Ghana’s currency should reflect a wider range of important personalities, events and milestones that have shaped the nation’s history.
According to management, banknotes are more than instruments for financial transactions. They also represent a country’s national identity, cultural heritage and collective historical memory.
The Park explained that introducing the famous photograph of Dr Kwame Nkrumah declaring independence would provide a powerful representation of Ghana’s freedom, sovereignty and national pride.
The photograph captures one of the most defining moments in Ghana’s history when Dr Nkrumah announced the country’s independence on March 6, 1957, ending British colonial rule.
The event marked Ghana’s emergence as a sovereign nation and became an important milestone in the broader African independence and liberation movement.
The Memorial Park described the independence declaration as the culmination of years of struggle for self-government, noting that few events have had a greater impact on Ghana’s national identity.
Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary in Focus
The proposal comes as Ghana prepares to celebrate its 70th Independence Anniversary in 2027, making the suggested inclusion of the historic photograph particularly significant.
The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park believes featuring the image on selected banknotes would provide a lasting tribute to the historic event that marked the birth of modern Ghana.
Management further indicated that the proposed Bank of Ghana Heritage Series offers an important opportunity to recognise influential national figures, historic events and achievements that have shaped the country’s development.
The Park maintains that Ghanaian currency should serve as a reflection of the nation’s history rather than merely facilitating everyday financial transactions.
It argued that the moment Ghana attained independence remains one of the most important chapters in the country’s history and deserves greater recognition through the proposed banknote redesign.
If adopted, the proposal would introduce another prominent historical image to Ghana’s currency while preserving recognition of the Big Six and their contributions to the country’s independence movement.
