President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ghana Export-Import Bank (GEXIM) to begin developing a 200-acre light industrial area at Weta in the Volta Region, a project expected to generate up to 10,000 employment opportunities when fully operational.

The proposed industrial hub will primarily focus on textile and garment manufacturing, with an initial target of creating approximately 3,000 jobs as operations begin.

President Mahama announced the initiative during the 2026 Hogbetsotso Festival on Saturday, November 7, revealing that land for the project had already been acquired to facilitate the commencement of construction.

“We have commissioned the Ghana EXIM Bank to commence work on a Light Industrial Area in the Weta area. Two hundred acres of land has been acquired. We expect that initially when it starts, it will create some 3,000 jobs and grow eventually to 10,000 jobs when it is fully operational,” he stated.

The Weta industrial development is expected to promote local manufacturing, expand Ghana’s textile and garment industry, attract private sector investment and create employment opportunities for residents of the Volta Region.

Mahama Announces Eastern Corridor Road and Volivo Bridge Construction Timelines

Beyond the proposed industrial hub, President Mahama outlined key infrastructure development projects expected to improve transportation and economic activities in the Volta Region.

He disclosed that most sections of the Eastern Corridor Road are expected to be completed by the end of 2027.

The President also announced that construction of the Volivo Bridge across the Southern Volta River is scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 2027.

According to him, the bridge will serve as an important transportation link along the Eastern Corridor Road, improving connectivity between the northern and southern parts of Ghana.

The completion of these road infrastructure projects is expected to facilitate the movement of people and goods, improve regional trade and support economic development across the country.

Mahama Pledges Attention to Coastal Erosion Challenges

President Mahama also addressed the persistent challenge of coastal erosion affecting communities along Ghana’s coastline, particularly in the Volta Region.

He acknowledged the difficulties faced by families who have repeatedly been forced to relocate because of advancing sea levels and coastal erosion.

The President stressed the importance of implementing sustainable measures to protect vulnerable coastal communities and prevent further displacement.

“No family should have to endure repeated displacements as a result of coastal erosion,” he said.

The proposed Weta industrial hub, Eastern Corridor Road improvements and Volivo Bridge project form part of broader efforts to promote industrialisation, job creation, infrastructure development and economic growth in the Volta Region.
