On Saturday, August 19, 2023, tragedy hit the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) when a soldier from the 5 Infantry Battalion perished after what was likely an accidently discharged weapon.
At the time of the occurrence, Private (Pte) Bayou Roger was working at the Base Ammunition Depot (BAD) in the vicinity of Michel Camp in the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality of Greater Accra.
The sad situation occurred at around 7:50 am while Pte Bayou, a member of a platoon from the Southern Command, was sitting on his bed, according to the early findings of the investigation.
At eight in the morning, he was waiting to relieve his coworker at a duty position when his rifle suddenly went off, hitting him beneath the chin. Tragically, he passed away right away as a result.
The slain soldier’s body was quickly brought to the mortuary of the 37 Military Hospital after the tragedy.
The Homicide Unit of the Ghana Police, located at the GBETSELE Police Station, is collaborating with the Military Police to conduct a thorough investigation in an effort to ascertain the facts surrounding the tragedy.
The GAF would like to express its sincere sympathies to Pte. Bayou Roger’s grieving family, friends, and coworkers.
This terrible incident serves as a reminder of the dangers and difficulties that military personnel experience while putting in tireless effort to defend and safeguard the country.
The GAF’s Director General of Public Relations, Brigadier General E Aggrey-Quashie, sent this condolence message on the group’s behalf.
