The arrest of ‘Democracy Hub’ protesters on September 21, 2023, in Accra, has been denounced by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The NDC claims that the police’s actions are dishonorable and a violation of their fundamental rights.

“The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has learned of the brutality shown to the Occupy Jubilee House protesters in the early hours of this morning with profound regret.

The NDC is dismayed by the police’s use of such crass techniques at a time when the IGP is praised for his efforts to make the Ghana Police Service the best institution in the nation.

This repugnant display of force is contrary to that. It is regretful that the police believe that using force and repressing human rights is the appropriate course of action, the NDC said in a statement issued under the general secretaryship of Fifi Kwetey.

The party demanded the release of the protesters who had been detained.

“It is a real shame that we cannot find more peaceful means to solve these concerns after 31 years of our democratic path. This is a significant setback for our democracy. We demand that the police handle these matters in a professional manner and immediately free the detained demonstrators.

“We express sympathy to demonstrators who have been hurt or detained by the police in a spirit of unity. We thus appeal to all progressive forces to join the NDC in helping those protestors who have been detained by the police or hurt by them.

Protesters who attended the #OccupyJulorBiHouse action in the area of the Jubilee House were detained by police.

In order to demand remedies to the economic crisis, the protest’s organizers, Democracy Hub, had already notified the Ghana Police Service of their intended demonstration on Nkrumah Memorial Day.

On the day of the event, however, the police were successful in getting a court order blocking the protest from continuing.

The choice of Nkrumah Memorial Day, in their opinion, is crucial to conveying the message since it honors “the spirit of resilience and resistance that led the struggle against oppression and dispossession.”

The protest proceeded as planned, but the police detained and arrested a large number of the demonstrators.
