Following Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s election as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, the Christian Council has advised voters not to insert religious feelings into the next general elections of 2024.

The Council made it clear that neither Dr. Bawumia nor former President John Mahama’s candidacies represent any particular religious identity or set of beliefs.

The caution was delivered by CCG Chairman Rt Rev Dr Hilliard Dogbe during the symposium on Religion and Peaceful Co-existence in Accra in response to worries expressed by attendees, including Senior Research Fellow Kwesi Jonah.

The Council emphasized that concentrating on pointless religious remarks could cause friction and conflict, endangering the nation’s democratic credentials as well as its peace and stability.

The Rt Rev Dr Dogbe asked Ghanaians to put the candidates’ intelligence first and refrain from bringing in racial or religious tensions throughout the election process.

He emphasized the need of drawing lessons from previous elections and urged political parties to put the welfare of the people ahead of their own narrow interests.

A number of dignitaries present at the meeting, such as the National Chief Imam and the Omanhene of Essikado Traditional Area, underscored the significance of tolerance, solidarity, and cooperation amongst heterogeneous groups in fostering enduring peace.

In order to achieve the common objective of promoting peace in Ghana and the West Africa sub-region, stakeholders were urged to collaborate by Rev. Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, the chairman of the National Peace Council, despite differences in politics and religion.
