The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has revealed that, in light of allegations of widespread cheating during the 2023 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), it is presently reviewing the scripts of 22,270 candidates in particular subjects.
Candidates can view the BECE provisional results on the official website, www.waecgh.org, as they have been released.
Concerns have been raised about the integrity of the results for 22,270 of the 600,900 applicants that took part in the school examination—300,404 males and 300,496 females from 18,993 schools—of which there were a total of 600,900 candidates.
This comprises 366 candidates with hearing impairment, 54 candidates with other special educational requirements, and 53 candidates with visual impairment.
2,137 locations around the nation hosted the exam, and 3,366 candidates were noted as missing.
61 candidates were listed as absent from the BECE for Private Candidates, which drew 1,839 participants from 15 centers (942 males and 897 females).
Following an investigation into a number of anomalies that arose during the examination and the scripts’ subsequent marking, the 34th Meeting of the Final Awards and Examiners’ Appointment Committee for BECE, held on November 6, 2023, decided as follows:
Subject results for 312 school candidates and 3 private candidates will be canceled because they cooperated with other candidates or took outside materials into the testing room, including printed materials, textbooks, and prepared notes.
For 41 school candidates and one private candidate found to have cell phones in the exam room, the full set of results would be canceled.
Exam results for 180 candidates for school and 4 candidates for private applicants who are suspected of various infractions being withheld.
complete results for two private candidates and 110 school candidates who are suspected of various violations being withheld.
WAEC advises all parties involved to exercise cautious and issues a warning against dishonest people claiming to be able to upgrade results in exchange for money.
The fact that WAEC results are secure and verifiable is reminded to candidates.
The results of current investigations will determine what will happen to the 22,270 applicants whose results were suppressed.
