The majority leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, emphasizes the value of routinely reviewing the standing orders of Parliament, saying that doing so will improve its oversight capabilities.
With effect from January 2024, the Parliament adopted new standing orders to maximize its operating effectiveness.
At a capacity workshop on the revised standing orders over the weekend, Afenyo-Markin made the call, stressing the need for reforms to bring the rules controlling parliamentary operations into line with the changing dynamics of governance.
He said, “For the house to discharge our deliberative representational financial control, information dissemination, and legislative oversight and responsibilities efficiently and effectively, there is a need for these rules as contained in the standing orders to be revised.”
He went on to say that it is crucial to make sure that the rules guiding meetings, in plenary as well as committees, take into account the shifting dynamics of politics and governance.
In addition, he disclosed a new addition to the new standing orders called “Backbenchers Time,” which is intended to foster inclusivity.
