At the 2024 African Heritage Awards Ceremony held in Lagos, Nigeria, on Saturday, former president John Dramani Mahama was presented with the African Advancement Award for Exemplary Leadership.

The African Heritage Awards, which are hosted by the Heritage Times of Nigeria, provide a forum for bringing together notable African organizations, innovators, and businesspeople who, like John Dramani Mahama, have contributed significantly to the continent’s rise to prominence.

The second iteration of the awards, held in 2024, was presided over by Dr. Seretse Khama Ian Khama, the former president of Botswana. In 2024, the inaugural tournament was held in Kigali, Rwanda.

Mr. Mahama, who is leading the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to Ghana’s 2024 elections, was recognized as an Exemplary African Leader in a citation that also included efforts to address power shortages and increase job creation through agricultural expansion.

Mr. Mahama has been leading the NDC to economic challenges and improved livelihoods through the implementation of massive infrastructure projects across critical sectors.

In order to improve Ghanaians’ quality of life, the Mahama administration prioritized major economic measures and carried out extensive infrastructure projects in a number of industries, including transportation, healthcare, education, power, and housing.

“To address the power shortage problem, Mahama deployed emergency plans and sped up the completion of power plants, which resulted in more than 800 megawatts of power within 18 months.”

“John Dramani Mahama is a man of peace who passionately loves his people. This love for peace and security in Ghana was put to the test when, after a democratic election, he peacefully handed over power to his successor in the spirit of strengthening and sustaining democracy in Africa.”

“For being a shining example with a proven track record of his passion for advancing democracy, peace, security, and development of Ghana and Africa, we celebrate his tenacious spirit, which has driven Ghana to greater heights with impacts that are still felt today.”

Among the other award recipients at the occasion were Dr. Jayne Obioma Onwumere, CEO of the Property World Africa Network, who was honored for her efforts in women’s empowerment and emancipation, and the African Rising Movement, recognized for social justice and advocacy.
