The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to stage its “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration today, Thursday, August 6, in Accra, saying the protest is aimed at defending democracy in Ghana, the rule of law, constitutional governance, and democratic accountability.
According to the opposition party, the peaceful demonstration forms part of its campaign against what it describes as political persecution, selective justice, and the alleged misuse of state institutions under the current administration.
NPP Raises Concerns Over Judicial Decisions and Political Harassment
The NPP says the protest seeks to draw national attention to several issues it believes threaten Ghana’s democratic system.
Among its major concerns is the recent acquittal and discharge of former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Tamakloe Attionu. The party argues that the decision raises questions about the consistency and impartiality of Ghana’s justice system.
The opposition party is also protesting what it describes as the arbitrary arrest, detention, and alleged harassment of some of its members by state investigative and security agencies. According to the NPP, these actions are politically motivated and intended to intimidate members of the opposition.
Demonstrators to Present Petitions to Supreme Court and Jubilee House
Thousands of NPP supporters, executives, and sympathisers from across Ghana are expected to participate in the protest, which will begin at the forecourt of the Supreme Court in Accra.
During the first phase of the demonstration, party leaders will present a petition to the leadership of the Supreme Court, outlining their concerns over recent judicial decisions and calling for stronger protection of judicial independence and the rule of law.
Following the presentation, participants will embark on a peaceful march through major streets in the capital before proceeding to Jubilee House, the seat of government.
NPP Calls on President Mahama to Protect Democratic Institutions
At Jubilee House, the leadership of the New Patriotic Party is expected to submit a second petition to President John Dramani Mahama, urging the government to address what the party describes as increasing threats to democratic institutions.
The petition is also expected to call on the President to ensure that state agencies operate independently, fairly, and without political interference.
Security Tightened for NPP Protest in Accra
The NPP has maintained that the demonstration is intended not only to address concerns affecting its members but also to promote good governance, constitutional democracy, and the protection of the rights and freedoms guaranteed under Ghana’s Constitution.
Meanwhile, security agencies are expected to deploy personnel along the protest route to maintain law and order, manage traffic, and ensure the safety of demonstrators, road users, and the general public throughout the event.
