The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for the resignation of Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka over concerns about Ghana’s fight against drug trafficking and repeated international seizures of suspected cocaine shipments allegedly linked to the country.

The opposition party says the growing number of narcotics interceptions abroad raises serious questions about Ghana’s anti-drug trafficking operations, border security measures and the effectiveness of intelligence-sharing among security agencies.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, NPP Second Vice Chairman Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, argued that the Interior Minister must accept responsibility for the concerns surrounding Ghana’s national security and drug enforcement arrangements.

NPP Questions Muntaka’s Leadership Over Intelligence-Sharing Concerns

Nana Boakye particularly questioned why Muntaka remained in office after reportedly disclosing that some foreign security partners had become reluctant to share sensitive intelligence with their Ghanaian counterparts.

According to the NPP executive, the concerns stem from fears among foreign agencies that confidential information could be compromised by individuals within Ghana’s security system.

He argued that the situation reflected a serious loss of confidence in the country’s security leadership, including the National Anti-Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) and authorities at Kotoka International Airport.

Commenting on the reported concerns involving French authorities, Nana Boakye said:

“For the French seizure, I am still amazed why Muntaka is still at post. In fact, the Interior Minister himself, on TV, made it public that the French authorities are saying that they don’t have confidence in their Ghanaian counterparts, so they are not going to share any information with them because they are of the belief that government officials are complicit in this matter.

“That alone is a vote of no confidence in Muntaka. That alone is a vote of no confidence in the leadership at NACOC and that alone is a vote of no confidence in the authorities at the Accra International Airport,” he said.

NPP Cites 3.9 Tonnes of Cocaine Seized in France

The NPP also cited the seizure of nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine by French customs authorities at the Port of Dunkirk in September 2026 as a major reason for its concerns.

The cocaine consignment, reportedly concealed in a container declared to be carrying plastic waste from Ghana, was intercepted on September 10.

The shipment was estimated to have a street value of approximately €225 million, equivalent to about US$261 million.

Subsequent investigations reportedly pointed to possible connections with an international drug trafficking network.

Calls for Accountability in Ghana’s Anti-Drug Trafficking Operations

The opposition party maintains that repeated seizures of suspected narcotics shipments allegedly connected to Ghana require urgent attention and accountability from the country’s security leadership.

It argues that the developments raise concerns about the performance of agencies responsible for drug enforcement, airport security, intelligence coordination and border surveillance.

The NPP is therefore insisting that Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka should resign, arguing that the concerns surrounding international intelligence-sharing and cocaine interceptions have undermined confidence in Ghana’s anti-narcotics operations.

The allegations and calls for resignation form part of the party’s criticism of the government’s handling of drug trafficking and national security issues.
