Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused the government of exploiting state institutions and authority to intimidate opposition lawmakers and suppress dissenting voices in Ghana.

He described the alleged actions as a coordinated abuse of power aimed at weakening the Minority Caucus and preventing it from holding the government accountable.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Mr Afenyo-Markin maintained that the Minority would not surrender its constitutional responsibility of scrutinising government policies, challenging decisions and representing the interests of Ghanaians.

He said the caucus remained determined to perform its parliamentary oversight duties despite what he described as growing intimidation, harassment, arrests and detention involving some opposition members.

According to the Minority Leader, several opposition MPs had experienced difficult situations which he believes were intended to discourage them from questioning government actions and expressing opposing views.

“We see in this pattern a coordinated autocratic abuse of power intended to exhaust our resolve and silence our voices,” he stated.

Afenyo-Markin Reacts to Abu Jinapor’s Removal from Parliament

His comments followed an incident on Tuesday involving Damongo MP Samuel Abu Jinapor, who was removed from the parliamentary chamber by a Parliamentary Marshal.

The incident occurred after Abu Jinapor reportedly refused to withdraw an allegation he had made against Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

The development has attracted attention to parliamentary proceedings and the growing tensions between the Majority and Minority sides of Parliament.

Minority Leader Warns Against Political Intimidation

Mr Afenyo-Markin stressed that the Minority had no objection to lawful investigations and accountability, insisting that all Ghanaians, including opposition politicians, must be subject to the laws of the country.

However, he warned that state institutions must not be used as political tools to intimidate opposition members or force them into submission.

He argued that the Minority would continue to resist any attempt to turn state authority into an instrument for suppressing political opposition.

“What we resist and will never desist from resisting is a conversion of State power into an instrument of political submission that we can never compromise on,” he said.

The Minority Leader reaffirmed the caucus’s commitment to parliamentary oversight, democratic accountability and the protection of constitutional rights.

He further declared that intimidation and other challenges would not prevent the opposition from carrying out its duties in Parliament.

“We shall not be moved. We shall not be cowed. And we surely shall not be silenced,” Mr Afenyo-Markin added.
