The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has disclosed that pressure from within his own political party to constantly uncover scandals involving the New Patriotic Party (NPP) influenced his decision to resign from his position as a parliamentary ranking member.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday, Mr Kwetey explained that he disagreed with expectations that he should find fault with the NPP at all costs following the NDC’s defeat in the 2016 general elections.

According to him, he was unwilling to manufacture allegations or exaggerate issues simply to satisfy political demands.

He explained that his decision to leave the ranking member position was partly motivated by his refusal to engage in what he described as the unnecessary search for political scandals.

“One of the reasons why I quit the position as a ranking member was because I simply could not understand the expectation from my own corner that I must find scandal on NPP at all costs,” he stated.

Mr Kwetey, who previously served as a ranking member on the Trade and Industry Committee, maintained that political accountability must be based on credible evidence of wrongdoing rather than partisan interests.

He stressed that he was prepared to expose genuine misconduct but would not deliberately manufacture controversies against political opponents.

Fifi Kwetey Defends Ablakwa Over GH¢16.4 Million Evacuation Controversy

The NDC General Secretary referred to his previous experience when commenting on the NPP’s criticism of Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa over the evacuation of Ghanaian nationals from South Africa.

The controversy has centred on an alleged GH¢16.4 million discrepancy in expenditure related to the evacuation exercise involving 1,964 Ghanaians.

The issue intensified after the NPP youth wing organised a demonstration in Accra on Tuesday, demanding accountability and transparency over the use of public funds.

The protesters called for the alleged financial discrepancies to be investigated and demanded the release of flight invoices, records of beneficiaries and an independent audit of the evacuation expenditure.

They also called for the recovery of any funds found to have been improperly spent.

The Minority in Parliament has raised questions about payment records, including allegations that some beneficiaries received amounts lower than their expected entitlements.

However, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has denied any wrongdoing and invited the Auditor-General to conduct an independent examination of the expenditure.

Kwetey Challenges NPP to Provide Evidence Against Ablakwa

During the interview, the programme’s host questioned Mr Kwetey about concerns surrounding signatures and alleged duplicate entries in documents relating to the evacuation exercise.

Mr Kwetey dismissed the concerns as peripheral issues, arguing that the NPP’s criticism of the Foreign Affairs Minister was politically motivated.

He suggested that Ablakwa was facing intense scrutiny because of his previous efforts to expose alleged wrongdoing during the administration of the former NPP government.

The NDC General Secretary challenged the opposition party to provide concrete evidence showing that the Foreign Affairs Minister had stolen public money.

He maintained that accusations of financial misconduct must be supported by verifiable evidence rather than political claims.

“What have you been able to establish against the Foreign Minister that was stolen? What? How much money? You can’t prove one,” Mr Kwetey questioned.

The GH¢16.4 million evacuation expenditure controversy continues to generate political debate, with the NPP demanding accountability and the Foreign Affairs Minister maintaining that he has nothing to hide.
