On Monday, May 20, 2024, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, vice president and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), officially opened a state-of-the-art Medical Waste Treatment facility and Integrated Recycling and Composting Plant (IRECOP) in Kperiha, near Wa, in the Upper West Region.

With an installed capacity of 400 tons of municipal solid waste processing per day, the IRECOP—which will serve Wa and the Upper West Region—has enough capacity to receive waste generated from the entire region, providing a long-term solution to the region’s waste management problems.

In addition, the Centralized Medical Waste Treatment Facility will be utilized to gather and handle hazardous medical waste, including spent needles, items stained with blood, pathological waste, Covid-19 trash, and garbage from vaccination campaigns.

Through a partnership between the government and Jospong Group of Companies, the recently commissioned IRECOP is the seventh facility to be commissioned out of 16 to be developed in all 16 regions, and the medical waste treatment facility is the fourth facility to be commissioned out of 14 to be built.

Speaking at the commissioning, Dr. Bawumia stated that in addition to directly creating over a thousand employment, these state-of-the-art facilities would guarantee a healthier environment, better living conditions for the general public, and a decrease in pollution of the air, water, and land.
