Russia and Senegal, a West African country, have announced plans for more profound collaboration. In April, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova voiced trust in Sebegal’s newly elected president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye. She stated that Russia’s connection with Senegal would be strengthened during his administration.

The Russian newspaper, Sputnik recently spoke with Russian Ambassador to Senegal Dmitry who revealed Russia’s plan to bolster its partnership with Senegal under the new administration led by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

“We are counting on the creation of a joint commission on economic cooperation. Now everything depends on the Senegalese side,” Kurakov said.

The Russian ambassador shared his view of a rise in trade turnover between both countries should an agreement be reached on economic cooperation.

According to the ambassador, Russia is also counting on starting charter flights with the African nation.

“The problem for our tourists is the lack of direct flights and rather expensive tickets. […] We expect that eventually, at least charters will be able to fly here, because we have already had such an experience with the Gambia.

Before COVID-19, charters flew there, this destination was popular. I think that such opportunities exist, but we are hardly talking about regular flights,” he said.

Additionally, Kurakov said that Russia is teaching people to maintain Russian helicopters, and Senegal is interested in purchasing these aircraft
