Mr. Andrew Asiamah Amoako, the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, has called Mr. Henry Quartey, the Interior Minister, to testify before the House on Wednesday, June 26, 2024.
It is anticipated that the minister would provide parliamentarians with an update on the recent nationwide killing spree of private security officers.
This summons comes after two private security guards were tragically killed at their duties at the Wa Model Junior High School and the Ghana Education Service’s Wa East headquarters.
Members of Parliament for Bole-Bamboi and Wa Central, Yusif Sulemana and Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, respectively, have expressed their displeasure and worries about the investigation’s sluggish progress and the pressing need for swifter action to stop the violence.
“The Minister of Interior last week deployed personnel to Bole to help curb this situation.
However, I believe that much more needs to be done to prevent these attacks.
The perpetrators are specifically targeting watchmen, often attacking them while they are on duty with fatal blows to the head.” Mr. Sulemana stated
“Within this short period, three people have been killed.
Even before these recent incidents, there were serial killings affecting various individuals.
This is a critical matter, and I urge the Interior Minister to come to the House and provide a detailed update and assurance to the affected communities.” he further satated.
Dr. Pelpuo expressed similar opinions, “Last year, nearly nine people were killed in Wa Central under similar circumstances.
These victims were unsuspecting individuals going about their work, only to be murdered. Despite police investigations since last year, we have yet to see substantial results, and the killings have resumed, affecting areas like Bole and Wa once again.”
“The police must intensify their efforts and conduct thorough investigations,”, he added,
We are deeply concerned about the loss of lives and the apparent lack of progress in solving these crimes.
We call on the police to be more proactive, and we expect the Interior Minister to come here and report on the measures being taken to address this dire situation.” Dr. Pelpuo added.
“Table, kindly inform the Minister to brief the House next Wednesday. That is my ruling,” Mr Andrew Asiamah Amoako also said.
The Interior Minister has been urged by both MPs to give a thorough briefing on the current state of affairs and the measures being taken to safeguard private security guards and the public.
The Interior Minister will go before Parliament on Wednesday to give the required briefing and reassure the communities impacted by these awful events, as instructed by the Second Deputy Speaker in response.
