Following the passing of its flagbearer, Madam Akua Donkor, the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) has ten days to choose a new presidential candidate, according to the Electoral Commission (EC).
Additionally, the EC briefly halted the production of presidential ballots, which were almost finished.
The decision comes after Madam Akua Donkor’s death was formally announced by the Commission.
“The Commission has since informed the GFP to make arrangements to nominate a new Candidate and inform the Commission accordingly. In the meantime, the Commission has suspended the printing of Presidential Ballot Papers which was near completion.”the EC stated in a statement released on October 29.
Madam Akua Donkor died at Ridge Hospital in Accra, and the Electoral Commission sent its deepest sympathies to her family.
Her death’s circumstances are still unknown.
An influential figure in Ghanaian politics, Akua Donkor founded and led the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) and was known for her steadfast support of women’s and farmers’ rights.
With the country’s general elections coming up on December 7, 2024, her death is a major setback for the party and her followers.
