Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has urged the opposition National Democratic Congress, or NDC, to accept the results of the general elections scheduled for December 7, 2024, stressing the significance of upholding peace and the democratic process.

Given the NDC’s history of attacking the Electoral Commission (EC) and casting doubt on the validity of election results, former President Kufuor’s appeal is especially noteworthy.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Mr. Kufuor emphasized the value of democracy and unity while urging Ghanaians to maintain peace and accept the election’s outcome.

The National Democratic Congress has expressed reservations about the Electoral Commission’s management of the election process, which has prompted this call.

Citing inconsistencies in the voter list, the NDC has voiced its displeasure with the EC and demanded a forensic audit.

The EC, however, has promised that these issues are being resolved, claiming that the display exercise was an audit procedure in and of itself, enabling voter information to be verified and corrected.

Tensions are still high, though, as the NDC has threatened to “eliminate” Jean Mensa, the head of the EC.

The accuracy of EC numbers has also been questioned by the party’s director of elections.

Given the nation’s history of electoral violence, former President Kufuor’s call for composure and acceptance of the election results is essential in response to the event.

“It is essential for everyone to line up calmly to exercise their voting rights on election day. Electoral violence is unacceptable, and I hope for a peaceful election process,” he urged.

“We must acknowledge that genuine power resides with the populace, and it is crucial to accept the results,” he said.

“I urge all participants to prioritize peace during this election,” Kufuor added.

He urged people to abstain from all forms of violence and to vote calmly.

But regardless of the election’s outcome, he reminded Ghanaians that the people truly own the power and asked everyone to put unity and peace first. Whatever one’s own inclinations.
