Parliament’s Minority Caucus is urging the ministers of finance and education to come before the House to discuss the GH¢100 million debt that is allegedly owing to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

The alleged deficit, which had serious ramifications, including postponed maintenance of WAEC’s equipment and payments to examiners, would cause operational disruptions for the Council and postpone the results of the 2024 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination, the Caucus noted.

According to Mr. Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, Ranking Member on the Parliamentary Education Committee, examiners’ refusal to release scripts until funds were received would probably cause the 2024 results’ December 19 release date to be missed.

Therefore, he encouraged Mr. Alban Bagbin, the Speaker, to bring the two ministers to Parliament so they could explain why the government had not released monies to the Council to enable the results to be released.

The Minority drew attention to the debt’s possible effects on Ghana’s educational system, specifically on students hoping to enroll in postsecondary institutions for the 2024–2025 school year.
