Accra’s Metropolitan Archbishop, the Most Reverend John Bonaventure Kwofie, has encouraged President John Mahama to keep the promises he made to Ghanaians prior to the next election in 2024.

He urged the president to keep his promises on subjects like LGBTQ rights, “galamsey fraud,” and fighting corruption in order to earn the confidence of the electorate.

At Sunday’s Holy Mass, which marked the culmination of the 80th anniversary festivities of the St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Kpehe, Accra, Most Rev. Kwofie made the call in his sermon (homily).

“Aiding children to seek Christ from discovery to discipleship” was the theme of the festival.

The results of the general election in 2024, according to Most Rev. Kwofie, demonstrated the people’s “deep confidence” in the president’s ability to steer the nation toward development and prosperity.

“We voted for you because of what you said on LGBTQ. We are indeed watching you,” he continued, “do not disappoint us.”

Concerned about the speed at which corruption was ruining the nation, Most Reverend Kwofie urged leaders to “sacrifice their lives as ransom for the people” and live by example.

“Let your thoughts and actions be consistent with the titles you hold. Ghana should be built on hard work and good conscience,” he continued.

On behalf of President Mahama, Mr. Francis-Xavier Sosu, the Madina Member of Parliament, gave the church his word that the president will keep his pledges to the Ghanaian people.

“President Mahama will not disappoint the church. The National Democratic Congress will not disappoint the people of Ghana,” he declared.

Mr Sosu added that the government’s ambition to reset the country was a shared responsibility and urged on everyone to contribute in their own sectors to assist actualize the Ghanaian dream.

Over the past 80 years, St. Paul Catholic Church in Kpehe, Accra, which was founded in 1945 with only 25 parishioners, has expanded to include over 20 Societies.

In 1945, Reverend Father Gerhard Fini celebrated the church’s first Holy Mass in Accra New Town, where West Africa Secondary School had stood.

Very Rev. Fr. Casmir Gosu, the parish priest currently in charge, took over in 2020. Rev. Fr. Isaac Amoateng Gyasi was his assistant until 2024, when Rev. Fr. Derrick Senyo Abbey took over.
