A five-member group has been formed by Governs Kwame Agbodza, Minister of Roads and Highways, to evaluate and enhance the efficacy of the Axle Load Control Program.

The Ministry made this announcement on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, in a news release.

The effort aims to improve the program’s operational efficiency in controlling the movement of large freight and address major operational problems.

The statement claims that the committee is made up of representatives from the Ghana Standards Authority, the Ghana Highway Authority, the Ministry of Transportation, Private Haulage Operators, and National Security.

Identifying operational and structural problems, looking into regulatory infractions, assessing how fines are handled, and suggesting required changes are all part of their mission.

The statement said, “The Committee is expected to identify systemic and operational issues that require reforms, interrogate any violations of regulatory provisions, evaluate the management of collected fines, and provide suitable recommendations to improve the program.”

The Axle Load Control Program was created to stop big cargo vehicles from being overloaded, which is a major cause of road pavement damage and a rise in traffic accidents.

However, its full usefulness has been impeded by operational inefficiencies.

The Ministry claims that the decision to examine the program is consistent with its larger initiatives to protect road infrastructure and advance road safety.

The statement emphasized that one of the main causes of the early deterioration of road surfaces and a spike in traffic accidents is overloading huge freight vehicles.

The Ministry reassured the public that it was committed to resolving the issues within the program and reaffirming its commitment to improving road conditions.

According to the statement’s conclusion, “The Ministry assures the public of its commitment to enhancing road safety and mitigating overloading to ensure road pavements fulfill their intended lifespan.”

It is anticipated that the committee’s conclusions and suggestions will be very important in determining how axle load laws are developed in Ghana going forward.
