Streetlights on Asafoatse Nettey Road, Bannerman Road, the Octagon via Tudu traffic light to Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, and the John Evans Atta Mills Highway to the Ghana Fire Service Training School have all been restored and are now completely functional.
Hon. Linda Akweley Ocloo, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, confirmed this on Wednesday while on an inspection tour to evaluate the lighting system’s performance along the city’s main thoroughfares and its sister assemblies following repairs.
Speaking to the media following the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s (AMA) lighting inspection, the Minister stated that even though 70% of the goal had been reached, this did not imply that work would stop.
Along with Mr. Douglas N.K. Annoful, the coordinating director of AMA, and Mrs. Lilian Baeka, the Chief Director for the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC), the Minister emphasized the importance of finishing the project, noting that some streetlight installations were still in progress.
She clarified that because some of the region’s roadways were still being built, lighting could not be installed there until the roads were formally turned over.
She thanked all parties for their support and participation in the project and promised that the required lighting infrastructure would be installed after the roadworks were finished.
Ahead of the inspection, the Greater Accra Regional Minister gave a media conference on Tuesday and stated that the initiative to restore street lighting on the region’s main roads and streets was making great strides.
She emphasized that the project was in line with the President’s reset strategy to increase security and visibility, with the goal of having 70% of lamps fixed and completely functional during her first 50 days in office.
She said that 126 streets in all, including town roads, highways, and community roads around the area, had been completed. She added that the Tema Motorway and the Accra-Tema Beach Road were left out of the project because of current construction.
She stated that the Ghana Highways Authority was currently employing contractors to perform maintenance on sections of the N1 (Tetteh Quarshie to Kasoa), N6 (Achimota to Amasaman), and N4 (Shiashie to Oyibi).
