As part of heightened efforts to fight malaria throughout the area, the Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate is scheduled to start household registration for the 2025 Long-Lasting Insecticide Nets (LLINs) Point Mass Distribution (PMD) Campaign on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
The “United Against Malaria” registration campaign will run until Sunday, April 13, 2025, and will involve trained registration assistants visiting homes to sign up household heads for the forthcoming free mosquito bed net distribution.
Dr. Louisa Ademki Matey, Director of Health Services at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, stated that the goal of the house-to-house strategy is to contact every family and attain complete community coverage.
“We want to make sure that no household is left out. Our Registration Assistants will register heads of each household and will require their name, identification card, and telephone number during the registration period,” she explained.
Dr. Matey emphasized how crucial the registration stage is to precisely estimating how many bed nets are required to adequately protect households against malaria.
She asked residents to completely participate and give the medical staff correct information.
She underlined the need to prioritize protection for the most vulnerable members of communities, including children under five, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with HIV/AIDS, TB, and other chronic illnesses.
Dr. Matey further emphasized that the deployment of LLINs is a crucial tactic in the National Malaria Elimination Strategic Plan (2024–2028), which aims to guarantee that 100% of the population is protected by at least one malaria prevention measure.
“Sleeping under a Long-Lasting Insecticide Net protects individuals from mosquito bites that can cause malaria and also guards against other vector-borne diseases such as dengue fever and lymphatic filariasis,” she stated.
In addition to being free, she said, sleeping under a net helps avoid expensive medical care and hospital stays that could result from severe malaria, which can be lethal if left untreated.
In order to guarantee that no one is left unprotected, Dr. Matey urged every citizen of the city to participate in the exercise and register their families.
“Let’s all get on board to protect our communities. Registering for a net is a simple but powerful step towards eliminating malaria,” she urged.
