President Akufo-Addo has demanded that Speaker Alban Bagbin expedite the acceptance of Gertrude Torkornoo’s nomination for chief justice.
The president wrote in the letter, “I respectfully hope that the approval of Justice Torkonoo by Parliament can proceed swiftly to enable her to assume office as soon as practical following the retirement of Chief Justice Anin Yeboah.
On May 24, 2023, Chief Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah will step down from her position.
He would reach the superior court justices’ statutory retirement age of 70.
Justice Torkornoo, who has served on the Supreme Court for the past four years, has been a member of the legal system for the past 19 years, and according to President Akufo-Addo, is “duly qualified and eminently fit to discharge the functions of Chief Justice.”
Justice Torkornoo will become Ghana’s third female chief justice if parliament gives her the green light.
The first was Justice Georgina Theodora Wood, and the second was Justice Sophia Akuffo.
Since he took office in January 2017, President Akufo-Addo has appointed three people to the position of Chief Justice, and she would be the third.
Justice Akuffo came first, then Justice Anin Yeboah.
