A revolutionary program to combat plastic pollution through innovative recycling, female leadership, and community education, the “Waste to Purpose initiative” was started by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in collaboration with the Eco Earth Foundation and the Miss Earth Ghana organization.
In a speech read by his Executive Secretary, Accra Mayor Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey welcomed guests to the initiative’s launch and referred to it as a “transformational call to action” to transform the city’s waste problems into chances for environmental renewal, job creation, and innovation.
According to him, poor waste management and plastic pollution are still a problem in the city, endangering sanitation and public health.
“But with partnerships, commitment, and creativity, we can flip the script,” the Mayor stated, adding, “Waste can become wealth. Pollution can become purpose.”
He praised development partners and sanitation workers whose work, he said, was laying the foundation for sustainable urban resilience, and said the Waste to Purpose program would empower women and youth in recycling and promote a circular economy that was in line with Accra’s sanitation goals.
The campaign would combine environmental action, social impact, and gender empowerment, according to Ms. Gisela Emefa Gagakuma, Executive Director of the Eco Earth Foundation. She also mentioned that the Miss Earth queens from Ghana and other nations had come together to take meaningful action across institutions and communities, not just for photo ops.
“Our Miss Earth Queens have come here not just to take pictures but to take action,” she emphasised.
The campaign will involve community clean-up initiatives in collaboration with the AMA, the distribution of branded tree seedlings to encourage carbon reduction, and school visits to teach waste segregation and climate stewardship, according to Ms. Gagakuma.
To show that sustainability included caring for people just as much as caring for the environment, she said the queens would also visit hospitals and give blood.
The Waste to Purpose Project’s official leader, Miss Earth Ghana 2024, Winnifred Esi Sam, gave a personal account of how growing up close to Saltpond influenced her perspective on recycling. She recalled an elderly woman who taught local kids how to gather plastic sachets, clean them, and turn them into raincoats and school bags.
“I remember wearing those kinds of raincoats to school on rainy days. They were unique, durable, and handled with care… That memory stayed with me and taught me early that waste can be transformed into something special,” she recounted.
She said the project would teach communities about the potential of discarded materials while transforming “trash into treasure” using creative approaches, including eco-friendly tie-dye and cutting-edge recycling procedures.
In her speech, Miss Earth India 2025 Gauri Gothankar emphasized the importance of forming sustainable daily routines.
Details of her “Western Wheel” campaign, which promotes the use of reusable cloth diapers, menstruation cups, and recycling applications, were released.
Queen moms, members of civil society organizations, and supporters from the diplomatic community attended the ceremony and praised the endeavor to encourage behavioral change and advance sustainability as a means of achieving environmental justice and economic empowerment.
In order to change waste management procedures and establish Accra as a leader in creative and inclusive environmental stewardship, the Waste to Purpose project is anticipated to conduct a number of community engagements in the upcoming months.
