Ghana’s Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has urged architects to actively protect the country’s architectural and cultural legacy.
She underlined the vital role professionals must play in influencing national development and conserving history when on a courtesy call from the Ghana Institute of Architects (GIA).
The visit served as a preview for the GIA AGM, which will take place in Cape Coast from November 13 to 18 and have as its topic “From Castles to Future Cities.” The event will include architects from all around West Africa as well as guest architect Francis Kéré.
The Minister was given a presentation by architect David Kojo Derban, who was recently recognized internationally for his work in historic protection.
Additionally, GIA announced a design contest aimed at repurposing Ghana’s castles and forts for tourism.
The Institute promised to work more closely with the Ministry to advance sustainable development and heritage.
