According to the General Legal Council (GLC), lawyers are exempt from taking exams to renew their licenses.

An “erroneous reportage” of the Chief Justice’s remarks at the enrolment ceremony for 196 lawyers admitted to the Bar on Friday, May 5, 2023, claiming that lawyers would have to write an exam to renew their licenses, was brought to the Council’s attention, according to a statement released in Accra.

According to the report, the Chief Justice only alerted the new attorneys of a pending Council initiative during his speech on behalf of the General Legal Council.

In certain jurisdictions around the world, it is a normal need for lawyers to complete CPD before their practicing licenses can be renewed, according to the statement.

For the advantage of the clients they represented, it was stated that practice aimed to hone lawyers’ skills and keep them current with legal advancements.

Accordingly, the Legal Profession Bill, which would soon become law, would require all lawyers to complete the program, which is outlined in the Legal Profession (Professional Conduct and Etiquette) Rules, 2020 (Legislative Instrument 2423). This was stated by the Council as being in line with that.
