The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is convinced that the presidential and parliamentary elections slated for May 13, 2023 will take place as planned.

The Ghanaian Electoral Commission (EC) had stated that it would be unable to oversee the NDC’s presidential and parliamentary primaries, which are scheduled for Saturday, May 13, 2023. The EC claims that a court order issued by one of the candidates for president, Dr. Kwabena Duffour, prevents it from holding the elections as planned.

In his lawsuit against the party, the former finance minister claims that his team has found certain inconsistencies in the voter list to be utilized for the exercise.

The EC claims that it is unable to participate in the elections until the legal difficulties have been resolved.

However, Fiifi Kwetey, the party’s general secretary, advised party members and Ghanaians to maintain their composure while the Party, with the help of its legal staff, worked to address the short-term issue.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) wishes to reassure presidential and parliamentary aspirants, as well as members, supporters, and sympathizers, that the party is taking all necessary and legal steps to prepare for the presidential and parliamentary primaries on Saturday, May 13, 2023. This comes as a result of a court action brought by one of the presidential aspirants.

“It will be recalled that Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, one of the three presidential aspirants, on Tuesday filed a suit against the party seeking to injunct the primaries,” said Mr. Kwetey.

While urging restraint among the membership, he continued, “We want to reassure you that as of April 20, 2023, the party had provided the complete Delegates List to every presidential candidate in accordance with our commitment made in our guidelines that this Primary Document would be provided to every presidential candidate.

As the noble people of Ghana eagerly look to our party to save this country from the current national collapse on December 7, 2024, it is our hope that we will all put the broader interest of our great party ahead of all considerations.

The party is therefore optimistic that this short-term obstacle will be soon resolved to allow for the timely staging of the primaries.
