All illegal buildings built on the Tema Ramsar Site will be demolished, according to proposals made by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC).

On Monday, August 4, 2025, the demolition exercise is set to start, affecting Communities 5, 6, 10, 11, and 12.

The action was taken in response to growing worries about encroachment on the wetland, which is an important ecological buffer and habitat for a variety of wildlife.

Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo voiced concern about the extent of unlawful development occurring within the Ramsar reserve during an unexpected site visit earlier this week.

She vowed to act quickly to stop the deterioration and called the invasion “a serious threat to the ecological integrity of the Ramsar Site.”

“This is a protected area, and we cannot allow private developers or individuals to compromise its long-term environmental value,” the Minister stated.

In addition, Madam Ocloo strongly cautioned those engaged in the unlawful selling of land parcels within the wetland and urged them to stop their operations right away.

She emphasized that the government would take legal action if needed and would not stand by while protected lands were commercialized.

In order to prevent property loss or damage, residents and occupants of the impacted structures have been instructed to leave the area and remove their possessions prior to the demolition beginning.

Under the Ramsar Convention, the Tema Ramsar Site is one of Ghana’s designated wetlands of international importance and is essential to biodiversity protection, flood management, and water purification.

The scheduled exercise is a component of the Regional Coordinating Council’s and REGSEC’s larger initiatives to preserve and reclaim environmentally sensitive areas throughout the region.
