The Africa Health Sovereignty Summit, which will be hosted by President John Mahama on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, would bring together African political leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders in global health.
The historic project will investigate audacious measures to secure sufficient funds to close the massive infrastructure deficit following declining donor support and legislative measures to subsidize the treatment of fatal chronic illnesses and new health risks.
The Summit will discuss and formally support The Accra Initiative, which would create common values, standards, and a reform plan, according to a statement issued by Felix Kwaku Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications.
The Summit’s main results will be:
1. Creation of a Presidential High-Level Panel to design a roadmap for a reimagined global health governance architecture aligned with national and international efforts.
2. Commitment to core principles of inclusivity, leadership, accountability, resilience, sustainable funding, and cross-sector collaboration.
3. Launch of the SUSTAIN initiative to promote country-led and investment-driven health systems, powered by domestic resources, private sector engagement, philanthropic partnerships, and technical expertise.
4. Endorsement of the Accra Compact, articulating Africa’s vision for health sovereignty and a more equitable global health order.
The African Union institutions and Rwandan President Paul Kagame’s continuous efforts to enhance health financing and continental health cooperation are being expanded upon by the Accra Summit.
The Summit comes after President Mahama gave a stirring speech at the Global Summit on Health and Prosperity in Brussels in June 2025.
It is inspired by his leadership during the 2014 Ebola outbreak, when he oversaw regional efforts to contain the disease, demonstrating Africa’s ability to face emergencies head-on with solidarity and resolve.
