After years of misery on the busy route, commuters and transport operators are finally feeling better as work on the long-abandoned Pokuase–Nsawam segment of the Accra–Kumasi highway has finally resumed.

In order to make up for missed time, construction workers have been working every day since they formally returned to the site over the weekend.

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), which had threatened to hold protests in response to the government’s tardiness in addressing the issue, began to lobby for the resumption.

The government reportedly paid the contractor the money that was still owed, allowing the work to proceed.

In an interview with Accra-based Class 91.3 FM, Mr. Kwame Governs Agbodza, Minister for Roads and Highways, affirmed this.

On the Accra–Kumasi highway, the Pokuase–Nsawam stretch is a vital link. Rehabilitating it should relieve traffic, cut down on travel time, and increase road safety for the thousands of people that use it every day.
