Mohammed Zakou, an NPP activist who was arrested over the weekend for allegedly disseminating inaccurate information on Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s health, has been granted bail by the Achimota Circuit Court.
On Saturday, April 12, Zakou was taken into custody after posting on Facebook the words, “Rest Well Her Excellency,” along with sobbing emojis.
This post was generally perceived as inaccurate and premature news of the Vice President’s passing.
The vice president was previously verified by government officials to be ill but to be responding well to treatment.
He was later accused of spreading misleading information.
A National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) prosecutor said Zakou acknowledged posting the message but stated it was meant as a goodwill gesture.
Zakou’s legal team, headed by attorney Gary Nimako Marfo, requested bail when they appeared in court on Monday.
Prosecutors asked for strict requirements to guarantee the accused stays available for the ongoing judicial procedure, even if the state did not object to the application.
The court issued a GHC 100,000 bail with two sureties. Additionally, Zakou was mandated to submit a weekly report to the investigating investigator.
A case management conference has been scheduled for May 12, 2025.
