The case of Yaw Asante Agyeman, who is contesting his 35-year jail term after being found guilty as an alleged accomplice of infamous armed robber Ataa Ayi, will be heard by the Court of Appeal on June 5, 2025.

The court, which is led by Justices Janapare, Stephen Oppong, and Aboagye Tandoh, is ready to decide Agyeman’s fate following almost eight years of legal fights.

After authorities discovered Yaw Asante Agyeman’s contact information on the cell phones of Ataa Ayi’s robbery syndicate members, the former motorcycle repairer was taken into custody.

His lawyer told reporters, “The link to Ataa Ayi was that most of the bikes used by the robbers in Ataa Ayi’s fraternity were repaired in his workshop.”

“So, when the swoop was done on Ataa Ayi, for some reason, because they saw his name on their phones, they charged him together with the others for conspiracy to commit robbery. He had no counsel and was sentenced to 35 years with the others,” he continued.

His attorney became aware of the case through the then-officer in charge of the Nsawam Prison, which led to a drawn-out appeal process hampered by procedural delays and missing court documents.

Agyeman’s attorney feels that the fact that the Attorney General’s Department has not submitted any arguments against the appeal shows how strong their case is.

Yaw Asante Agyeman, who has been imprisoned for over 20 years for a crime he maintains he did not commit, could finally be released if he is successful.
